Goodmorning.AsIenterthefinalweekofmypresidency,I’’’’mextraordinarilygratefulforalltheprogresswe’’’’vemadetogethertheselasteightyears--buildingthestrongesteconomyinageneration,renewingourethicofresponsibility,andstrengtheningthebondsofcommunityandfamilyallacrossAmerica.TodayIwanttotalkaboutourprogressinreducingyouthviolenceandnewstepswe’’’’retakingtomakeourcommunitiesevensafer.

Overthepastfewyears,terribletragediesatColumbineandotherschoolshaveforcedustotakeahardlookatyouthviolence,andanevenharderlookatwhateachofuscandoandmustdotoensurethatsuchtragediesdonothappenagain.

Althoughtherearenosimplesolutions,recentevidencesuggestswearemovingintherightdirection.Accordingtothelatestdata,violentcrimebyyoungpeoplehasbeencutnearlyinhalfsince1993;schoolyarddeathshavedroppeddramatically.Thesearebothimportantdeclinesthatreflectthelowestnationalcrimeratein25years.

But,still,wehavemoretodo.Atmydirection,theWhiteHouseCouncilonYouthViolencehasdevelopedanewwebsiteandtoll-.Andthetoll-freenumberis1-866-SAFE-YOUTH.That’’’’,and1-866-SAFE-YOUTH.

I’’’’malsopleasedtoreleaseanotherimportantresource--aguideforparentsoncommunicatingbetterwithteenagers.ItincorporatesthelatestresearchaswellasthebestideasfromtheWhiteHouseConferenceonTeenagers,whichHillaryandIsponsoredlastyear.We’’’’lldistributethispublicationnationwidethroughthewebsite,thetoll-freelineandwiththeassistanceofschoolprincipals,schoolnursesandpediatricians.

Likeallparents,HillaryandIknowit’’’’snotalwayseasytotalkwithyourchildrenaboutsensitivesubjects.That’’’’swhythisnewguideissoveryvaluable--becauseitteachesparentshowtolistenmorecarefullytotheirchildrenandnurturerelationshipsbuiltontrust,love,disciplineandrespect.

Weestablishedafter-schoolandsummerschoolprogramsthatarehelpingnow1.3millionchildrenayearstayoutoftroubleandsucceedintheclassroom,andwe’’’’velaunchedanationalprogramtofosterlocalpartnershipsthatmakeourschoolssafer,identifychildrenatrisk,andgetthemthehelptheyneed.
